SO....it's winter, it's been cold, if you live on the Island you feel like nothing goes on in winter, if you live on the North Fork you know nothing goes on in winter. Instead of hibernating though, pull out from under your rock and take a look at our upcoming show dates. I'm pretty sure we should start calling it the defrost tour cause we are about to get this Island good and warmed up.
Larrin and the Locomotives is the North Forks newest band. The band is comprised of Larrin Gerard (Guitar and Vocals), Derek Spencer Cocks (Bass, Guitar and Vocals) and Chris Best (Drums, Guitar and Vocals). The band formed this past fall in October when Derek and I (Larrin) reuinted after time spent on two separate coasts. It had been years since I had seen one of my best friends and as soon as we saw each other again our friendship seemed to come together right where it left off and we began playing music together almost immediately. He introduced me to Chris, his friend since childhood and after one session of jamming we just began to fall into a groove.
We're named The Locomotives because these guys have been the driving force behind getting me motivated and moving. They are the Thomas the tank engines to my little engine that could. I'm sure that many women in the music world experience guff from time to time about wanting to perform or trying to learn an instrument without formal instruction but lets just say I've had my fair share of criticism. Be it instructional demonstrations on how I should wear my strap to how to hold a pick to comments made about my deep voice. Lets face it though everyone gets criticized in the music world I'm not saying I can't hang with the best of em its just when your the only woman in a room full of men you do sometimes feel like the target in target practice. Thankfully these guys give me great compliments and learning new things with them has become exciting rather than arduous.
After many failed attempts at trying to connect with other musicians on Long island and in Brooklyn I finally found these guys who have been nothing but supportive and amazing. Each of the locomotives; both Derek and Chris, are a unique force of their own with distinctive personalities. Their individual drive and collaboration is the mechanism which makes the machine move. In my mind when it comes to music, its more than just one person its the machine we build that drives us. Not to mention after spending four years listening to the beat of the subway cars and 9 months riding the LIRR nothing spelled "locomotive" to me like the sounds of the drums and bass. It's off of those sounds that I draw inspiration to write songs and it helps that the house we practice in is set right off of the railroad tracks on the North Fork of Long Island.
I had tried looking for many years to find my nitch when it comes to how I play music and who I wanted to play it with and though I have finally found who I am going to be playing with the locomotives and I are still working on the direction of how. They have been amazing enough to have learned many of my original songs and we hope to record an album by the end of the summer which will include some originals and some covers. The future of where we take this project though looks bright I have a feeling collaboratively we are going to come up with a sound that is truly distinctive of who each of us are. So keep tabs on us, your not going to want to miss any of our stops on the track to our destination.
Up coming shows are: The Waltz Astoria in Astoria Queens February 25th at 9pm. The Market in Greenport on March 4th to celebrate the coming of Spring. The Greenpoint Brewery will be hosting the event @ the Market! March 26th from 8-? we will be playing at Four Doors Down in Mattituck, NY.
We thank you as always for your support! The more support we have the further the Locomotives can carry our music!
Much Love~
Larrin
